Remotes

Most seat key fob replacement drivers keep a spare remote in the house or garage, but when they lose it getting replacement keys from a dealer is expensive and time consuming. This is because most dealers will programme the key using the car's computer which will need to be reset. However, many people buy second-hand keys off the internet that are not programmed to their car. This can be a much cheaper alternative to going to the dealer. But, these key will not start the car because they will not have a transponder chip inside them. You can see the chip (yellow) in this picture below, it is a Dual Inline Package or DIP 18 pin chip. There are also a diode, transistor and resonator, all these parts make up the key's circuit.

Immobilisers

When car immobilisers began to become more popular in the last decade, car theft figures began to fall, but thieves are smart and constantly searching for ways to bypass security systems. They could get around the earlier immobiliser systems using a scanner tool to find the code on the transponder chip, and then copying it onto a blank key, but since then technology has advanced and they've had to think of new methods.

Luckily, the majority of immobilisers we supply and fit are Thatcham Cat 2 approved. The Thatcham Research organisation has tested and certified them. This not-for-profit organisation is the grading and approval system for the automotive aftermarket alarm and security equipment, including car immobilisers.

When the Thatcham approved system is activated it will transmit a coded signal to the Engine Management System (EMS) of the vehicle. This will stop the engine from starting without the proper key. If the vehicle is "hot-wired" following entry and it stops the engine after 30 seconds and will make it impossible to start.

As with any computer, the immobiliser may develop issues. Sometimes the internal battery or key fob might require replacement. It is best to have experts handle the job to make sure that everything is installed correctly and operates.

Transponders

Transponders send an identifying signal back when it is interrogated. This identifies the aircraft to air traffic control when it is in an active radar system and helps to maintain separation between planes. The information that the transponder transmits back is different depending on the type of system.

Transponders are also present in spacecrafts and satellites to communicate with Earth systems like cell phone networks or other communication networks. These devices receive signals on a variety of frequencies and then retransmit those signals on a different spectrum, similar to how repeaters in cell phone networks operate.

Often sophisticated transponders with sophisticated technology can be located on aircraft. They are utilized to monitor the status of the flight and provide navigational information including the aircraft's location and speed, altitude, and the route. Air traffic controllers use data from these transponders to control routes and ensure security.

Many personal keys contain transponder chips as well as aircraft transponders. These chips do not require batteries and are passive. This allows the ECU to read the transponder's signal when it is installed into the ignition lock.

The flight deck on most aircrafts is equipped with a switch pilots can switch their transponders either on or off. They can also choose an "ident" mode that allows the transponder to broadcast its unique squawk codes. This helps it stand out an air-traffic control panel that is busy.
